FROM DAY SAILOR TO BLUEWATER CRUISER

The transition from day or weekend sailing to being at sea for an extended period of time can be daunting enough without factoring in the responsibilities of keeping everyone on board well-fed and happy whatever the weather should serve up. But with prior planning and a little knowledge, not to mention some handy tips from a seasoned puddle jumper (the somewhat irreverent description applied to the not-inconsiderable feat of sailing crossing the Atlantic Ocean!), the job of preparing and cooking food onboard should be plain sailing.

After all, a happy crew is most definitely a well-fed crew!

HOW TO COOK SUCCESSFULLY AT SEA

Ensuring your crew are fed successfully at sea starts long before your boat leaves the dock.

From equipping your boat with the right cooking equipment to make your life easy, to learning how everything works onboard (and how to troubleshoot and fix things when they go wrong - trust me, something will always go wrong!); health and safety and food hygiene (nobody welcomes food poisoning, least of all mid-ocean), to menu planning, provisioning, storing and preparing food - and even what to do with food waste and refuse, we'll cover it all during this five day course.

Split between our classroom in Cowes and our sailing yacht in the Solent, you'll get chance to put everything you learn ashore into practice afloat. Cooking can be a lot more challenging when you're heeled to 45 degrees so learning how to store, prepare and serve food safely at sea is all part of the course!

CHEF SUPPORT AT SEA

Googling the fish your crew just caught off the back of the boat to check if it's safe to eat, or searching for alternatives to an ingredient you've just discovered has gone off isn't usually an option when you're mid-ocean. But most modern, bluewater yachts are now set up with satellite email, meaning that occasional contact with loved ones or emergency support is possible without taking out another mortgage.

Upon completion of your five day cookery course, you'll also benefit from six months of complimentary remote support from The Epicurean Sailor - by email or WhatsApp. Recipe forwarding, translation services and cooking support - whatever you find yourself stuck with, you'll have access to expert advice to help reassure or support you pre or on passage.
